1. International Workers' Day

Observed on: 01 May 2025

➢ Also known as Labour Day in some countries and often referred to as May Day

• Aim: celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement and occurs every year on 1 May, or the first Monday in May.



2. Union decides to caste count in next census

Union Cabinet has approved the inclusion of caste enumeration in the upcoming decennial Census exercise, marking a significant shift in India's demographic data collection policy.

Announcement made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ahead of Bihar Assembly elections.

The move comes even as the 2021 Census remains indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.


3. Zojila pass is now open to tourists and does not require prior authorisation or a no-objection certificate 

(NOC).

Zojila Pass:

❖ Elevation: Around 3528 m (11, 649 ft) above sea level.

❖ It is an important link between Ladakh and Kashmir, separating the Kashmir Valley from Drass Valley.

❖ Nestled on National Highway 1 between Srinagar and Leh, this pass is considered to be the second-highest 

pass after Fotu La.

❖ In 2018, the Zojila tunnel project was launched.

❖ When completed, it will be the longest bi-directional Tunnel in Asia


4. World Laughter Day

Observed on: 02 May 2025

• Aim: To raise awareness about

laughter and its many healing

benefits.



5. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by PM approved the FRP of sugarcane for Sugar Season 2024-25.

Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP):

❖ Price declared by the central government, at which mills are bound to procure sugarcane from farmers.

❖ The Sugarcane (Control) Order 1966 gives powers to the central government to fix FRP of sugarcane.

❖ Decided on the basis of the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).

❖ Some States (Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana & Uttarakhand) determine their own State Advised Price

(SAP) which is generally higher than FRP.


6. World Press Freedom Day

Observed on: 03 May 2025

• Aim: to Celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom;

✓ Assess the state of press freedom throughout the world;

✓ Defend the media from attacks on their independence; and

✓ Pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

• Theme: Reporting in the Brave New

World – The Impact of Artificial

Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media. 


7.International Firefighter’s Day

Observed on: 04 May 2025

• Aim: To recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighter’s make to ensure that their

communities and environment are as safe as possible.


8. Coal Miners Day

Observed on: 04 May 2025

• Aim: Coal mining is one of the toughest profession and to highlight the situation of people

working in coal mines.


9.Vizhinjam Port 

❖ India’s first deep-water, all-weather, automated transshipment port, designed for handling next-gen ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).

❖ Functions under the landlord port model, integrating smart tech and scalable design.

❖ Location: Situated at Vizhinjam near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala—just 10 nautical miles from key global shipping routes (Suez–Far East & Far East–Middle East).

❖ Developed & Operated By: Owned by the Government of Kerala and operated by Adani Ports & SEZ under a 40-year concession.



10. Recently, the U.S. and Ukraine signed a strategic minerals deal granting preferential U.S. access to Ukrainian mineral

projects and establishing a joint investment fund for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Ukraine’s Critical Minerals:

❖ Ukraine has 22 of the 34 minerals classified as critical by the European Union (EU).

❖ Major critical minerals in Ukraine include:

❖ Rare earth elements such as lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, erbium, yttrium, and scandium.

❖ Lithium, nickel, manganese, beryllium, gallium, zirconium, graphite, apatite, fluorite and titanium.

❖ Graphite reserves in Ukraine account for approximately 20% of global resources, crucial for EV batteries and nuclear reactors.

❖ Lithium reserves are estimated at 500,000 metric tonnes, one of the largest in Europe.



11. Lakkundi temples set to be finalised for UNESCO tentative listing as World Heritage Sites.

Lakkundi Temples:

❖ Located in the Gadag district of Karnataka, Lakkundi is referred to as ‘Lokki Gundi’ in ancient

inscriptions.

❖ Built during the period of Kalyana Chaluykas or Western Chalukyas.

❖ There are more than 50 ancient temples scattered throughout the village and houses 101 stepped

wells which are also called Kalyani.

❖ Kasi Vishwanatha Temple is the most ornate and elaborately furnished.

❖ It is also an important Jain center.



12. The Government of India has appointed a new chairman along with 7 new members in the National Security

Advisory Board (NSAB).

National Security Advisory Board (NSAB):

❖ It was first constituted in December 1998, as an advisory body of eminent persons outside the

government, including industry, media and civil society, among others.

❖ It is assisted by the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).

❖ Functions: To undertake long term analysis and to provide perspectives on the national security issues to the National Security Council (NSC).

❖ It also recommends measures and policy options on the issues referred to it by the NSC.

13. World Athletics Day

Observed on: 05 May 2025

• Aim: increase awareness about athletics and to encourage the youth to take up sports.

• Introduced by: International Association of Athletics



14 Operation Kagar

Federations (IAAF).

❖ It is a large-scale counterinsurgency initiative launched by the Indian government in 2024.

❖ Aimed at dismantling the Maoist (Naxalite) insurgency, particularly in the "Red Corridor" spanning Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and neighbouring states.

❖ Under this operation, around 1 lakh paramilitary troops, including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), its elite CoBRA units, District Reserve Guards (DRG), and state police, have been deployed in the left-wing terrorism-affected areas.


15. What is Operation Sindoor?


Operation Sindoor is India's retaliatory precision strike on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK). 

Launched on May 7, 2025, in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, including 25 Indians and 1 Nepalese.

Key target total 9 terror camps.

4 in pakistan and 5 in PoJK.

Why the Name "Sindoor"?

"Sindoor" (vermilion) is a symbol of marriage and sacrifice in Hindu tradition.

Chosen to honour couples killed in the Pahalgam attack and express national mourning and resolve


16. Abdali Missile

❖ It is a short-range, road-mobile, solid- fuel ballistic missile developed by Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research

Commission (SUPARCO).

❖ It is designed for tactical battlefield use and can deliver both conventional and nuclear warheads.

❖ Abdali missile system is designed for quick response scenarios on the battlefield


17. Igla-S

❖ It is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPADS) developed by Russia.

❖ It is a hand-held defence system that can be operated by an individual or crew.

❖ It is designed to bring down low- flying aircraft and can also identify and neutralise air targets such as cruise missiles and drones.


18. Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025

Key Provisions of the Scheme

❖Financial Coverage: Government will cover treatment costs of up to ₹1.5 lakh for seven days, provided the police are informed within 24 hours.

❖Claims raised by hospitals for providing treatment to be reimbursed from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund.

❖Victims can opt for treatment under Ayushman Bharat PM- JAY packages for trauma and polytrauma.

❖Eligibility: Applicable to all road accidents involving motor vehicles on any type of road.

❖Implementation: The National Health Authority (NHA) will coordinate with police, hospitals, and state health agencies to implement the scheme.

❖e-Detailed Accident Report (eDAR) application will help NHA in implementation of Scheme.

❖Ex-Gratia Payment: ₹2 lakh compensation for families of deceased victims in hit-and-run cases.

❖Legal mandate: under Section 162 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which emphasizes providing cashless treatment to victims of road accidents involving motor vehicle


19. Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary

❖Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Belgaum district of Karnataka.

❖The sanctuary was declared a protected area in December 2011.

❖The sanctuary is named after Bhimgad Fort, which was built by Shivaji in the 17th century.

❖The sanctuary is the source of rivers like Tillari, Malaprabha, and Mhadei river.
